According to the Federal Statistical Office, about 14% of the total agricultural land is currently used for the cultivation of energy crops. The energy yield per area can be increased many times over through photovoltaic and wind power.

The study "Solar Parks – Gains for Biodiversity" commissioned by the German Association of Energy Market Innovators "bne", aims to highlight whether and to what extent solar parks can contribute to species diversity in flora and fauna – biodiversity.

It concludes that solar parks have a significant and lasting positive impact on biodiversity. Leasing open spaces for photovoltaics can have a significant positive effect on biodiversity. As a kind of biodiversity island, solar parks can promote biodiversity in comparison to the surrounding landscape.

Solar energy has the potential to cover a large part of the energy demand in Germany due to the massive increase in efficiency and cost degression in recent years. Due to the advancing sector coupling and the international climate commitments, a faster capacity expansion of renewable energies is inevitable. With the accelerated expansion of ground-mounted PV systems through the leasing of open spaces for photovoltaics and a mix of other renewable energies, the goal of full supply can be achieved even faster and more economically. One of the central questions of the energy transition is how the expansion of ground-mounted PV systems can have the most positive impact possible on environmental protection, agriculture and nature conservation.

 

The German Association of Energy Market Innovators (bne) has found answers to these pressing questions by developing the "Good Planning" checklist. This checklist aims to ensure that the leasing of open spaces for photovoltaics and the resulting installations make a positive contribution to climate protection, biodiversity, nature and environmental conservation and rural development.
